Since 1999, the CCCHFA has been working to protect Atlantic herring, recognizing it as one of the ocean’s most vital species. Initially work done on the CCCHFA Herring Campaign focused on sea herring. Recently, the campaign’s focus has expanded to include river herring as the dire situation of the stock was better understood. River herring and sea herring school together for most of their lives, so the fishing practices of sea herring fishermen are partially to blame for the fall in river herring stocks. But the estuaries that the river herring depend on for spawning are also in severe decline. The river herring restoration program’s focus is on rebuilding river herring stocks through raising awareness of the plight of the river herring, restoring spawning habitat, and limiting the bycatch from the sea herring fishery. The lure of river herring presents a unique opportunity to involve the general public in creating a healthy and sustainable fishery.
This internship offers students a valuable opportunity to work with staff on three projects:
The intern’s primary focus will be on Rock Harbor Creek. The goal of this project is to determine hydrologic, hydraulic and ecosystem impacts relative to increasing tidal extent by removing restrictions. TThe intern will be responsible for implementing and conducting a fish, avian and vegetation survey of the site. The intern will be required to identify volunteers to assist and coordinate activities. Minimal training will be provided, so prior experience is an advantage. Candidate must be Tmotivated and a self starter. Candidate will be required to complete a final report summarizing the survey data.
