Monkfish

Monkfish

On Cape Cod, fishermen often target monkfish and skates together. Monkfish are known as "poor man's lobster," and they have been gaining in popularity over the past few decades. Ugly to look at, the meaty tail fillet is the prize that makes it onto restaurant tables and into home cooked fish stews.

Where it Goes

Almost all of the monkfish for sale in the United States comes from U.S. fisheries. The United States is also a major exporter of monkfish, supplying foreign markets in Asia and Europe with livers, tails, cheeks and whole fish.
