Commercial Fishermen Thank New England Delegation
On January 17, the U.S. Senate approved the FY2014 Omnibus Appropriations bill, which included $75 million in funding for fisheries disaster assistance. The House of Representatives had already done the same, and now the bill awaits President Obama's signature - something he has promised to do.
The New England fishery for iconic, bottom-dwelling species such as cod and haddock was declared a disaster by Acting Secretary of Commerce Rebecca Blank on September 13, 2012, but no funds had been made available before Congress appropriated them through this spending bill.
Fishermen from around New England thanked the region's Congressmen and Senators who worked tirelessly to make this relief a priority and get it included in the 2014 spending bill.
