Documenting Halibut Uptick
In the fall of 2012, the Fishermen’s Alliance and The Nature Conservancy secured a research permit to tag and release undersized Atlantic halibut. Halibut was once a significant fishery, but the population collapsed in the 1940’s and has not recovered.
“We had seen an uptick in halibut, but recent federal fish counts were low. We suggested doing research to track size and location of fish, how fast they grow and where they migrate. The Trust made it happen because it believes fishermen’s contributions can help improve scientific data for management. We’ve tagged 60 halibut, and are going strong.”
