Ellie Leaning

ellie web resize“The Fishermen’s Alliance promotes the “radical” notion that prosperous livelihoods and ecological sustainability are not mutually exclusive. Cape Cod is a particularly vulnerable environment and the Alliance works to ensure the relationship between people and planet is symbiotic. Working at the Alliance enables me to further delve into issues of local food promotion and environmental policy from these interdisciplinary perspectives – including how to finance them.”

Ellie joined the Fishermen’s Alliance in February 2017. Prior to joining the Alliance, she worked in environmental education and sustainable agriculture in South Africa. As is typical in many small non-profits, she donned many hats and now brings a variety of experiences to the table at the Alliance.

Ellie grew up in a fishing and oyster farming family in Brewster, which instilled in her a deep respect for the waters, and those who fish and farm in them. She received her Bachelors degree in Environmental Studies from Franklin University Switzerland. While pursuing her MSc at Antioch University New England in Advocacy for Social Justice and Sustainability, Ellie works as the Project Coordinator at the Fishermen's Alliance, leading the seafood marketing and local seafood promotion projects along with education and outreach activities and wears several other hats in the Development and Communications departments.
