John Pappalardo Appointed to the New England Fishery Management Council
We are very pleased to announce that Fishermen’s Alliance CEO, John Pappalardo, has been appointed to fill an at-large seat vacancy on the New England Fishery Management Council. John was Governor Patrick’s first preferred nominee for this seat, and it was one of the Governor’s last actions before he left office. We are thrilled that John will make the voices of Cape Cod’s small boat fishermen heard on this national decision-making body. He will serve on the council until August 10, 2017.
John is always in pursuit of new solutions to managing our marine environment, and he will bring this passion with him to the council. He will be a strong advocate for including broader perspectives to address current challenges and on approaches to protecting the ocean ecology. One of his top goals is to bring local fishermen's knowledge and experience to bear on policymaking.
John sees the power of public-private partnerships as a key to improving the quality of public policy decisions, and to the creation of more flexible fisheries policies—meaning policies that make good sense in the communities they are meant to protect. He will come to the council table with an open mind and a commitment to help create a sustainable future for New England’s fisheries.
John was previously a member of the council from 2002-2011. He served five of those years as its chairman. He spent 13 years on the Massachusetts Marine Fisheries Advisory Commission, and currently serves on the Joint Oceans Commission Initiative, the Massachusetts Ocean Advisory Council and the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce.
